Google’s original Chromecast delivered a cheap, easy way to get content up on the big screen, but the market has changed a lot over the last seven years. To better compete with the likes of Roku and Fire TV, the new Chromecast with Google TV has arrived: Here’s what it brings to the table.
Chromecast with Google TV is a completely revamped version of the Chromecast we’ve all come to know and love over the past several years. Instead of being an HDMI dongle that uses your smartphone as a controller, the new Chromecast is built on top of Android TV OS with a remote to control the entire experience.
In terms of hardware, the new Chromecast isn’t extremely different from previous versions. It’s a dongle form factor with a built-in HDMI plug. Just plug it into your TV and a power source and you’ve got a fully functional way to get content up on the TV, but this time around the included remote controls the new “Google TV” platform.
Google TV is based on Android TV, the company’s other TV platform that’s been around for more than five years and has grown quite a bit, especially in the past two years. With Google TV, the completely redesigned homescreen is focused on delivering personalized content recommendations.
